I get asked a lot of questions… a LOT. From professional advice to freelance inquiries to the tools I use, etc. This page is a compilation of questions I get on a regular basis. I will try to answer them to the best of my abilities. If you have additional questions use the contact page general inquiry form.

General

Q. How long does it take you to complete an animation? +

A. It depends again on the complexity of the animation and the actions I am creating. Sometimes it takes me a week, sometimes a couple of months. Animation takes a good amount of time to create. The majority of animated films out there are done with teams of animators & artist. Even then it takes them a long time to produce animation. I am one lonely animator.

Q. What software do you use for your animation? +

A. Toon Boom Harmony

Q. What kind of color pencils do you use for your drawings? +

A. Prismacolor Color Erase pencils

Q. Can you draw me? +

A. No

Q. What are you working on now? +

A. Glad you ask check out my What are you doing now page!

Hiring

Q. Can I hire you for freelance projects? +

A. Yes, though I have very limited amount of time throughout my day for full time projects. With my full-time job, personal projects, and other commitments, the amount of time I can spend on freelance projects is limited to 1 to 4 hours a day. Depending on the complexity of projects and my availability I may decline in order to keep up with prior commitments. That said, you can still contact me about the project. Would love to hear how I might be able to help you. Use the contact form on the contact page.

Q. What kind of work can I hire you for? +

A.The following list of projects that I feel comfortable working on. I look for projects that I am able to deliver in a reasonable timeframe and I can fit into my schedule.

  • 5 to 10 second animations
  • GIF 2D animation of 1 character.
  • Character Design (limited to 3 max)
  • Illustration work
  • Children Books
  • Coloring Books
  • Mini game apps.

Q. What work won’t you do? +

A. The following list is projects types that I cannot work on due to the fact that I am a one man studio. These types of projects require a whole team of animators/artists to produce. I look for projects that I can deliver within a month or less and will not drag on.

  • Any animated short films that is more than 30 seconds long
  • Any kind of 3D projects
  • Feature Length films (unless its full time with benefits)
  • Music Videos
  • Videos Games
  • Short Films that need animation
  • Video Editing
  • Work for exposure projects.
  • No clear vision projects. You need to know what you want.

Q. What is your rate? +

A. My rates depends on how complex the project is. I cannot give an accurate rate until I better understand the scope of the project, what you're looking for and the timeline of when you want it by. In most cases I will do a base rate for the creation of the project along with a hourly revision rate. I have a form that you can fill out in the contact section on the type of questions I generally ask in order to better understand what you’re looking for.

Q. Why do you have a hourly revision rate? Do you work on spec? +

A. I have to charge a hourly revision rate so to keep the project from going out of control and stay on schedule. I have other things to worry about. While I understand that you want the project to be perfect (which is an illusion and nothing is truly perfect), there has to be an endpoint. Hence why I do not work on spec. Though there maybe times I will show clients Work in Progress shots or storyboards, allow me to do what I do best.

Q. Why won’t you work on a 5 minute animated film? Even with simple animation? +

A. Because I am one lone 2D animator and that is over 7200 frames of drawings (300 seconds {5 min x 60 seconds} X 24 frames/sec). That’s not including, cleanup, color, backgrounds and final composite. Plus I have a full time job, personal projects and other obligations. My time is precious to me. That is work for team of animators not just one.

Q. Why don’t you offer 3D services? +

A. First, I work as a 3D artist in my full time job, so I get my fill of 3D projects there. If I work on other creative projects I want to work within the 2D realm in order to keep from burning out. Secondly the costs of using programs like Maya or 3DS Max is very expensive. On average its around $1500/year ($190/month) subscription to use 3D type programs so it’s not worth it for me.

Q. an you draw or animate my favorite (insert copyrighted character)? I’ll pay you. +

A. No. Support the original creators.

Q. Can you draw in (insert a style other than my own)? +

A. It has taken me years to develop my own artistic style and while I dabble in other styles for practice, I would like to take on projects that are using my style not someone else's.

Q. I have a very small budget can I still hire you? +

A. Mayyybe? It depends on what you’re looking for. I try to be understanding of people’s budgets, though if its small budget and your looking for Disney level quality then I will say no.
